You Are ALREADY Enough!

Here goes nothing...I’m sure we’ve all had that moment. The one where we don’t really have any idea what we’re doing or what exactly we’re getting ourselves into, but we know it really is a step in the right direction…

That’s a perfect description of me as I sit here with a cup of coffee, okay okay, my second cup of coffee, writing this very first blog post. I’m currently doing a summer Bible study with some amazing women. We are devouring Shauna Niequist’s book Present over Perfect. It got me thinking, what better time to jump into a new journey that’s been on my heart for so long than right NOW, the present. I can pretty much guarantee that this will not be perfect, but if you’re still reading and haven’t clicked that little “x” at the top, thank you! My prayer is that one day my words will touch even just one person who needs to hear them as much as I do. So really, instead of here goes nothing, I’m going to go with - here goes...something. :)

You are already enough.

If only we could just leave it at that. If we all just heard and believed that one short, concise, yet loaded statement, we would be so much better off. But I will be the first to admit that even after turning “you are enough” into a melody and putting it on repeat in my head, it still doesn’t quite sink in many times. It’s one of those things that no matter how many times you’ve heard it, it seems to very easily get lost in the mix of emotions, in the chaos of life, and in the weight of the pressure we so often load on ourselves. So I am here today to remind you, yet again, that you are enough. Right now, who you are, where you are, you are ALREADY enough!

“For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.” Ephesians 2:10

WE ARE HIS! His handiwork. How can that not be enough?

Your story is enough.
Your presence is enough.
Your best is enough.
Your mind is enough.
Your love is enough.
Where you are in your faith journey is enough.

The message in my church last week really stuck with me. Every single person’s faith journey is different. We are all in different places of trust, belief, weakness. And that’s ok! We are constantly changing and growing, learning and building on. Where you are right now is already enough for God, but don’t let that stop you from growing even more. Start where you are, who you are right now, knowing that in God’s eyes, you are already enough, and then build on from there. Become even stronger in your faith, even more confident in yourself, knowing that every step of the way God meets you where you are with open arms. “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6

We also need to remember not to let the fear of “not being enough” keep us from taking new adventures. “What if I try and it’s not good enough? I disappoint someone or don’t live up to their expectations?” When really, the most important thing is, “Am I doing my best? And am I doing it for the Lord?” Your best is enough! There is absolutely nothing more we can do than our best. And even if it doesn’t work out, even if we fail...our weaknesses, our failures, those are even enough if we just give them to God and ask Him to use them to continue shaping us. I like to think of this poem, “August in Waterton, Alberta” written by Bill Holm:

Above me, wind does its best
to blow leaves off
the aspen tree a month too soon.
No use wind. All you succeed
in doing is making music, the noise
of failure growing beautiful.

Imagine it...a beautiful failure. A failure even covered in joy. When we are weak, He is strong. When we feel like we are not enough, He reminds us that we are. If only we stopped putting so much pressure on ourselves to be and achieve “perfect” and instead, focused on giving our best and accepting others’ “bests” then I think it would be a lot easier for so many of us to start believing that we really are enough.

So, who are you right now? Where are you in life? What are you really great at? What still needs work?

It’s already enough!
